What to Expect

The Cell Quality and Field Reliability team is the mass production facing portion of the Cell Engineering team within the R&D organization. The team leads mass production cell projects that impact cell performance, Tesla battery manufacturability, and product reliability. The group supports development of new mass production cell candidates by guiding design specifications and collaborating on cell material and process development projects.

The Gigafactory Cell Quality and Field Reliability team is seeking a reliability engineer to lead failure analysis of Li-ion cell related field returns, root cause analysis initiatives with vendors, identifying corrective/preventative actions, evaluating field exposure, and driving the optimal path forward across disciplines between Tesla and vendors.

The ideal candidate will demonstrate the ability to effectively interface across disciplines on both technical and strategic concepts internally and with suppliers. Strong interdisciplinary engineering fundamentals, organization, time management, and communication are necessary to excel in this role.

What You'll Do

  • Collaborate with service engineering and remanufacturing teams to identify cell related field issues and battery level failure analysis procedures
  • Lead the failure analysis and root cause analysis for cell related field returns
  • Identify, implement, and verify effectiveness of corrective and preventative actions with suppliers
  • Evaluate field exposure for cell failure modes and drive to closure with Tesla and vendors
  • Support FMEA activities to ensure design and manufacturing issues are identified and risks are mitigated
  • Provide Design for Manufacturability (DFM) feedback to cross functional disciplines
  • What You'll Bring

  • B.S./M.S. Engineering/Material Science degree
  • 1-3+ years of professional experience
  • Experience with high volume manufacturing and/or Li-ion cell technology
  • Demonstrated organizing of large projects across various disciplines
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills; ability to communicate with technical and non-technical team members is essential
  • Strong desire to learn and use advanced characterization and analysis techniques in Li-ion cell and battery pack manufacturing processes
  • Detail-oriented with exceptional documentation, organization, and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to use tools to produce, manage, and interpret data
  • Desirable Experience

  • Programming (SQL, Python, MATLAB etc.)
  • Data analysis and visualization software (Tableau, JMP, Minitab, etc.)
  • Familiarity with characterization techniques (Thermal, Mechanical, Chemical, etc.)
  • CAM/CAD software (CATIA, SOLIDWORKS, etc.)
  • From this employer
