What to Expect
As an Energy Electrical Specialist you will be responsible for defining the off-the-shelf electrical components that are used to install Tesla Powerwall, Solar Roof, and PV Retrofit systems. This role will work cross-functionally with product engineering, system design, jurisdictional compliance, reliability engineering, supply chain, technical publications, and training. You will optimize the electrical balance of systems to ensure the highest efficiency and simplicity of installation by completing hands on testing, reviewing nationwide compliance of products, advising technical publications teams on work instructions, and acting as an electrical expert to the supply chain and design teams. You will also collaborate on new electrical component introductions, set equivalencies to current parts, and work with new product introduction teams to determine cutover timelines and burndown of existing parts.
What You'll Do
• Work with supply chain to understand part shortages/supply constraints of off-the-shelf electrical components used in the installation of Solar Panels, Solar Roof, Powerwall, and EV chargers
• Apply electrical knowledge to determine the scope of impact and prioritize changes based on impact to operations
• Communicate with manufacturers to understand product benefits and limitations, gather spec sheets, and discuss manufacturing capabilities
• Support decisions using NEC code references and AHJ based requirements to review options with jurisdictional compliance and master electrical teams
• Detail test criteria and expected outcomes for reliability engineering team for new parts to be considered
• Aggregate consumption numbers from supply chain with design specification data to build forward-looking demand models
• Participate as a subject matter expert on design logic process updates to electrical diagram, bill of material, and building permit submittal materials
• Develop alternative design and installation methods if finding alternative parts is not feasible
• Propose changes to the greater business teams including product design engineering, reliability engineering, jurisdictional compliance, master electrical officers, technical publications, training, installation operations, business/finance, system design, supply chain, quality, distribution, and service
• Utilize part management software to create new part numbers, organize parts into design catalogs, define supersession between compatible parts, and create part revisions when necessary
• Work with technical writers/illustrator to develop technical documentation including Work Instructions, manuals, component level instructions and beta and pilot installations
• Act as a subject matter expert and technical resource for the part release process from initial approval through release in the field
• Identify installation methods/tools/parts that could be used to decrease training time and increase installation efficiency. Complete hands-on time trial testing to determine cost benefit
What You'll Bring
• 4+ Years relevant work experience; specialized in the residential electrical field pertaining to solar or battery backup systems
• 4+ Years of in the field electrical installation practices including a strong background in conduit raceways, exterior and interior wire raceway installations, as well as DC and AC electrical planning installation
• Journeyman Electrician or Master Electrician license preferred
• Renewable energy installation experience pertaining to residential retrofit, ground mount, commercial, off grid, etc.
• Familiarity with applicable industry codes; electrical, roofing, construction, and local level building department requirements
• Experience reviewing residential electrical diagrams, installation photos, and making judgements on installation quality
• Demonstrated ability to solve complex problems with minimal resources by utilizing self-generated or gathered data
• A hands-on approach to data gathering, instructional design, and communication to peers
• Battery Backup Design or Installation experience, residential energy storage system, generator systems, small scale wind turbines, etc.
• Experience working with cross-functional teams of various backgrounds and technical understandings
• Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
• Research and develop custom electrical assemblies (such as wire bundles, or electrical connectors) to be used for installation. Create product models and specification drawings that can be sent to manufacturers
• Evaluate prototypes parts and products for fit, form, function, and real- world applications. Provide feedback to manufacturers and work to optimize product
• Define scope for internal reliability testing and external NRTL testing if required, work with specified teams to review results and utilize a data driven approach to modify designs
• Spearhead the part release process from initial design through release in the field
• Comfortable working at heights, on sloped roofs, and with both energized and non-energized electrical systems
