Position Overview
This position will lead and organize the efforts of the Sustaining Engineering
team at Proterra. This team will provide design-focused support and technical
issue resolution for our battery products that are entering or are already in
mass production. This will entail leading the investigation and improvement of
products with key cross functional teams, performing failure analysis,
identifying design improvements, updating design specifications, testing to
product requirements, and documenting work through the design release process.
About the Role – You will:
Build, develop and manage a team of design engineers to provide design-
focused support to all battery products in active production.
Own the team budget, including planning for projects, tools, and
headcount.
Lead investigations to identify and implement engineering solutions to
design issues, utilizing Catia 3DXperience (3DX) to create/modify design
data (3D and 2D)
Build and drive technical project plans and schedules covering engineering
activities, meeting all design control and product development
requirements.
Your team will create and support documentation and reporting activities,
including (but not limited to) non-conformance reports (NCRs),
supplier deviation requests (SDRs), and engineering change requests
(ECRs)
Your team will also write, submit, and coordinate the approvals for
engineering change orders (ECOs), while also supporting the
implementation of design changes in production.
Work with quality and manufacturing teams to support first-article
inspections, line trials and production pilot builds.
Collaborate with the broader engineering team to provide DFA/DFM feedback
and assist in the development of significant design specifications, FMEAs,
DOEs, verification and validation protocols.
Build positive relationships with suppliers and manufacturing partners to
troubleshoot issues, request samples and understand cost and timing
impacts of changes.

You will report to the Director of Battery Design Engineering and
collaborate with other Engineering team members located at our
headquarters in Burlingame, CA and manufacturing facilities in Los
Angeles, CA and Greenville, SC.

Qualifications:
BS degree in Engineering with 10+ years' of product development experience
2+ years of team management experience with engineers or technicians
Exceptional people and leadership skills with outstanding communication
and presentation skills
Ability to effectively communicate technically complex topics to a broad
range of audiences (ranging from technicians to engineers to non-
technical members of the organization)
Proficient in 3D CAD design and 2D drafting (including GD&T) of
mechanical components (CATIA experience is preferred)
Knowledgeable in high and low volume manufacturing methods and equipment
Exposure to mechanical and electrical measurement equipment (isolation
testing, multi-meter, oscilloscopes, data acquisition systems, etc.)
