What to Expect

Tesla is currently seeking a motivated and accomplished Industrial Engineer to lead the design and analysis for people flow and transportation systems. This role requires strong industrial engineering fundamentals and the ability to apply first principles thinking to design people flow infrastructure. This role must have the ability to quantify factory, production, and administrative space configurations at a high level, working with ambiguous inputs. Ultimately this role works to lead the vision for people flow infrastructure for each new site. This position may be based in Reno/Sparks, NV or Austin, TX.

The team is responsible for developing a factory design which supports seamless integration between production, packaging, material flow, supply chain, construction, and facilities teams. Innovation is expected. Through a detailed understanding of the high-level factory objectives and extensive collaboration with the internal and external teams designing individual factory components, this team ensures that the overall factory design achieves all of Tesla's objectives.

The ideal candidate will excel in a demanding and fast-paced environment where they will work as part of a strong, agile, and highly motivated team to accomplish some of the most ambitious projects being attempted in any industry today. The candidate will be expected to collaborate primarily with architectural and civil teams while developing conceptual designs. However, the candidate will be focused on the entire factory as a system, ensuring production, material flow, and other functions will be a success. The candidate must have intuition on what tools to use at each stage of the project when tasked with an analysis.

What You'll Do

  • Display a positive attitude and practice strong work ethics that reflects the mission, philosophy and goals of Tesla.
  • Consolidate and categorize headcount data for new programs and factory functions
  • Conduct traffic analyses for the site over time
  • Develop solutions for road network expansion and additions with civil engineering groups
  • Create business cases for mass-transit systems, based on the nature of the site
  • Propose parking structure designs and locations with civil engineering groups
  • Propose shift schedules and patterns for site arrival and departure
  • Design pathways and processes for production teams to travel to workstations
  • Evaluate alternate solutions for moving associates and administrative staff through internal factory space (think escalators, elevators, moving walkways, shuttles, etc.)
  • Develop layout and location for factory amenities with architectural groups
  • Collaborate with architectural groups on administrative space design and location
  • Develop simulation models for flow lanes inside and outside of the building
  • Generate heatmaps to project areas of concern for vehicle, foot, and production traffic
  • Collaborate with material flow and factory layout resources to ensure people infrastructure is symbiotic with primary production objectives
  • What You'll Bring

  • 2+ years of industrial or manufacturing engineering experience with emphasis on people flow and transportation (internship experience may be considered)
  • BS or MS Industrial Engineering, Engineering Management, or other relevant education/experience
  • Extensive project management experience to make data-driven decisions and summarize results for executives.
  • Understanding of people movement solutions (Passenger vehicles. trucks, shuttles, mass-transit, escalators, elevators, moving walkways)
  • Demonstrated leadership and ability to drive projects with diverse teams in a high-volume manufacturing environment.
  • Experience quantitatively solving ambiguous infrastructure design problems at a systems level.
  • Exemplary verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience with layouts in AutoCAD, Revit, or similar modeling tool
  • Preferred Experience:

  • Experience with diverse and high throughput material handling and transportation challenges
  • Experience with material handling systems and production lines
  • Extensive experience with 3D discrete event simulation software (FlexSim preferred)
  • Experience with C based coding languages
  • Experience with Catia, Solidworks, Revit
  • Experience working in simulation consulting or dedicated simulation internal organizations
  • From this employer
