What to Expect

Due to recent growth Tesla's Gigafactory New York is currently seeking a Manufacturing Engineer assigned to support new Production lines. This role will own critical projects for our high-volume manual or automated manufacturing lines, support continuous improvement activities, independently diagnose equipment issues, and develop improved maintenance practices to maximize performance and minimize cost.

What You'll Do

  • Primary focus of this role will be:

  • Proficient in Controls, Robotics, Electrical engineering
  • Experience with PLCs (Siemens, Allen-Bradley, etc.)
  • Programming experience (C+, Python, Go, etc.)
  • Understanding of standard communication/ network protocols (TCP, IP, etc.)
  • Familiar with NACL Electrical safety standards (NEC, CEN, etc.)
  • Experience with electrical hardware/ wiring
  • External and Internal Vendor Management – Create RFQ's/RFP's and work with procurement team to develop cost effecting solutions which are delivered on time
  • Electrical schematic design experience preferred (EPLAN, AutoCAD)
  • Collaborate with design, process, quality and automation to develop a manufacturing line design
  • Identify new technologies to improve manufacturing process
  • Collaborate with peer engineers, internal machine shop and prototype shops, as well as third-party vendors to build, test, optimize and validate new equipment
  • Coordinate with other engineers and manage complete manufacturing line projects with multiple automated and manual work centers
  • Analyze equipment timing charts to optimize cycle times
  • Determine automation level based on payback time (ROI)
  • Work with Global Supply Management team to identify potential equipment vendors
  • Visit and evaluate equipment vendors and develop quote packages.
  • Development station requirements (work content, automated versus manual, buffering strategy, redundancy requirements, etc.)
  • Work with industrial engineering to develop material flow strategy within factory
  • Identify utilities needed and utility distribution strategy (PDPs, compressed air, process water, etc.)
  • Drive design of production workstations for ergonomics and efficiency
  • Collaborate with safety and ergonomic team to validate design
  • Develop tools to achieve ergonomic and safety targets
  • Oversee equipment installation and coordinate with building and utilities team
  • Validate and characterize new equipment and fixtures for production implementation
  • Lead off site equipment acceptance testing (FAT) prior to shipment
  • Demonstrate strong project management skills. Engineers are expected to collaborate with multiple teams to meet stakeholder requirements
  • Display a positive attitude and practice strong work ethic that reflects the mission, philosophy and goals of Tesla.
  • Own the functionality, stability, up time of automated manufacturing tool sets. Preemptively identify, address, and solve equipment and process concerns with production ramp, equipment reliability, efficiency, yield through modification of existing equipment or methods, and/or design and specification of an improved process.
  • Work closely with the maintenance team to fingerprint tools and ensure repeat ability of process as well as push the limitations of tool sets to maximize results.
  • Collaborate with design engineers on the interaction of processes with device performance.
  • Perform analysis and structured problem solving of yield and performance issues. Conduct failure mode effect analysis.
  • Improve process control through regular disciplined monitoring of production processes via statistical process control. Present data and results to gain support for factory operation, yield and quality improvement projects.
  • Set PM schedules and requirements as well as define key equipment parameters to track.
  • Responsible for the reliability, troubleshooting, repair and upgrade of tool sets. Design, test and specify new processes or equipment as needed.
  • Draft and maintain proper documentation and procedures for tool operations, PMs, transfer etc. Participate and/or lead cost reduction programs.
  • What You'll Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology (Robotics, Mechatronics, Mechanical, Electrical, Electro-Mechanical preferred) OR 5 years' experience demonstrating requirements of the role.
  • 1-2 years' experience as a hands-on engineering experience on manufacturing lines
  • Demonstrated strength of experience with high-volume automated manufacturing equipment.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD/ EPLAN
  • Evidence of exceptional ability.
  • Proven leadership in cost of ownership for large capital equipment and proven record of reliability and effective cost reduction.
  • Demonstrated experience with Six Sigma and Lean fundamentals.
  • Demonstrated experience initiating, leading and driving equipment engineering reliability projects to completion.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required.
