What to Expect

The Role

Tesla is seeking a highly motivated Senior Manufacturing Engineer to develop and engineer new processes and high-volume automation equipment with the Stator manufacturing team. Specifically, this engineer is expected to be or become a process expert in the field of laser welding applications, including work in both lab environment and high volume manufacturing. Other responsibilities would include supporting development and production ramp of highly automated manufacturing systems to wind, varnish, and assemble stators into completed housing assemblies. The Senior Manufacturing Engineer works closely with Tesla's internal Product Design, Operations, Facilities, Production and Quality Engineering teams and coordinates cross-functional design activities with equipment suppliers to develop new Drive Unit manufacturing equipment. This individual will also assume ownership of the design and technical transfer of the laser welding tools to Tesla Operations, qualifying them for use with the highest standards of safety, quality, and output.

This individual would be based in Austin, TX but would function as a global expert of these systems and some international travel will be required.

What You'll Do

Responsibilities

  • Develop laser weld processes and qualify them using laboratory analysis
  • Manage installation, qualification and ramp-up of manufacturing equipment including but not limited to laser welding systems.
  • Collaborate with Production Engineering, EH&S, Quality, Operations and Design for maximum yield, quality, machine availability and output
  • Optimize product flow and line efficiency while reducing Capex and lead- time
  • Generate machine specifications, documentation, and manufacturing instructions

    Requirements

  • BS Degree in Mechanical or Mechatronics Engineering or 5+ years relevant experience
  • Experience with SolidWorks or other 3D CAD software
  • Experience working with laser welding systems
  • Strong hands-on experience with high-volume and pilot manufacturing
  • Proven track record of data driven methodology to solve complex problems
