What to Expect

As a Crash Test Engineer, you will work as a member of Tesla's Passive Safety test team primarily based in Austin, TX. The main objective of this role is to conduct crash testing required to develop vehicle components, vehicle restraint systems, vehicle sensing strategies, as well as to conduct regulatory and consumer rating tests to evaluate current and future vehicle designs. In this position you will coordinate testing execution and be responsible for the physical set up of tests and for all aspects of test preparation, test execution and post-test analysis. You will collaborate closely with test technicians for day-to-day test responsibilities in the crash lab. Working with CAE and product design engineers, you will also be responsible for test request generation, data processing and reporting.

What You'll Do

  • Lead the preparation and set up for crash testing
  • Work closely with program managers to plan for necessary test samples
  • Divide up and precisely communicate day to day test related responsibilities among the technician group to maintain daily lab efficiency and to keep up with a challenging test schedule

  • Process and interpret test data, generating the appropriate graphs and plots required to communicate test results

  • Write comprehensive test reports and/or e-mail summaries, documenting the results of testing and to communicate any issues identified during testing
  • Work with internal engineering teams to develop and validate performance of the vehicle and its passive safety systems
  • Support post-test tear downs and inspections, documenting and reporting results
  • Support lab improvement projects focused on execution efficiency and test quality
  • Operate and maintain safe working practices and environment, always considering the safety of yourself and other employees
  • Effectively handle multiple priorities, organize workload, and meet deadlines.
  • What You'll Bring

  • A degree in mechanical/electrical engineering or work experience with equipment testing
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English with a variety of cultures, in all forms (verbal, calls, texts, emails)
  • Experience working in cross functional teams to drive product development

  • A go-getter attitude, fine attention to detail, desire to do things right, and a passion for saving lives

  • Ability and willingness to travel (up to 10%)
  • Experience executing, interpreting, and reporting on vehicle safety testing according to a variety of homologation and ratings protocols (e.g., FMVSS, ECE, US NCAP, IIHS, etc.) is nice to have
  • CAD experience (CATIA, Solid Works, or similar) is nice to have
