What to Expect
We are looking for a highly motivated engineer to help drive the development
of the manufacturing lines for Tesla factories. Specific responsibilities
include developing and analyzing potential factory layouts, develop
manufacturing systems capacities, optimize and balance manufacturing and
assembly processes and material flow through the factory and collaborating
with highly technical cross-functional teams to ensure that the factory
achieves the lowest dollar per sqft cost possible. This is an exciting
opportunity to work on the factory design for a cutting edge technology and
develop a world class manufacturing facilities. Tesla is a demanding and fast-
paced environment where you will work as part of a strong, agile and highly
motivated team to accomplish some of the most ambitious projects being
attempted in any industry today.
The Industrial Engineer works as part of a small team dedicated to
manufacturing engineering team and fully focused on designing future
manufacturing lines. The team is responsible for driving line and factory
layout and high level factory architecture decisions through quantitative
analysis. Through a detailed understanding of the high level objectives of the
factory and extensive collaboration with the internal and external teams doing
the design of the individual production lines to be located in the factory,
this team ensures that the factory design as a whole achieves all of Tesla's
objectives. The Industrial Engineer will do a wide variety of detailed
analysis and data gathering in support of the overall objectives of the team.
What You'll Do
Using AutoCAD, allocate and optimize space for production lines and other
supporting functions
Design and optimize manufacturing layout incorporating material flow and
headcount allocation
Establish capacity specs/targets (OEE and cycletimes)
Work with manufacturing engineers to design and iterate on manufacturing
processes
Perform Basic MOST analysis of process to project cycle times
Validate that all designs comply with ergonomic requirements
Balance processes to maximize efficiency
Calculate OEE to validate capacity
Calculate inline and interline buffers to optimize production
Work with factory simulation/modeling teams to validate line capacities,
develop flow paths and aisle sizing for products, raw materials, and work
in progress
Establish raw material delivery intervals
Design racking for raw material deliveries
Calculate direct and indirect headcount requirements
Validate cycle times during Sight Acceptance Testing (SAT) and Start of
Production (SOP)
Support production startup and ramp
Support handover to sustaining industrial/process engineers
Using data and analysis, resolve conflict among stakeholders for space
utilization
What You'll Bring
Experience with AutoCAD 2D
Experience in layout design for either manufacturing or warehousing
Knowledge in OEE, capacity planning, cycletime analysis (Basic MOST) and
line balancing
Experience doing the detailed analysis necessary to make data driven
decisions on factory layout design, production line design or warehouse
design
Able to work under pressure while managing competing demands and tight
deadlines
Exemplary verbal and written communication skills
Mastery in conflict management and objective thinking
Experience in Lean Manufacturing
Mastery of Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Visio
BS/MS Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering (or equivalent
exprience)
Knowledge of statistics, uncertainty, and sensitivity analysis
Propensity to approach problems and unknowns from a first principles point
of view and back it up math
Natural ability to speak and write effectively at all organizational
levels
