Position Overview

This position will provide comprehensive engineering technical support to Proterra's Battery Technology Lab Supervisor, Safety, Reliability, and Test Engineering Manager, and work closely with the Technology Engineering team. You will be responsible for supporting the setup, execution, inspection, and reporting of high voltage battery testing in the Proterra Technology Lab, as well as building, troubleshooting, and repairing prototype high voltage battery systems.

About the Role – You will:

  • Maintain and uphold high safety standards.
  • Support the Test Engineering team in assembling or producing components into completed high voltage battery systems or sub-systems.
  • Prepare engineering builds for test execution in accordance with detailed work instructions or schematics.
  • Support the development of Engineering and Validation projects with responsibility for modifying, building, and validating prototype harnesses and functional test equipment.
  • Diagnose/troubleshoot battery pack issues and support testing activities either in the lab or from the field.
  • Install test articles inside environmental chambers, on vibration tables, and on automated test stations in support of safety, reliability, and characterization tests.
  • Perform mechanical and electrical inspections on battery packs and components.
  • Record detailed notes and measured data from test execution and inspections.
  • Support periodic maintenance, organization, and cleanliness of the Proterra Technology Lab
  • Communicate and work collaboratively with a team of technicians, engineers, program managers, and other site leadership team members.

  • You will report to the Test Engineering Lab Supervisor and collaborate with other Engineering team members located at our headquarters in Burlingame, CA and other manufacturing facilities in Los Angeles, CA and Greenville, SC.

  • Your Experience Includes:

  • Equivalent or relevant experience in technical field
  • 5+ years of mechanical or electrical technician experience, preferably in high voltage battery, automotive, bus or heavy vehicle with a safety-first mentality
  • Experience with automotive electronic and mechanical systems
  • Hands-on mechanical and high voltage skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office applications
  • Familiarity with web-based platforms such as Jira, Confluence, and Jama
  • Proficient with electronic testing, measurement and vehicle diagnostic equipment (i.e., Isolation testing, Multi-meter, Oscilloscopes, data acquisition systems, etc.)
  • Physical Demands:
  • May work various shifts as needed; may be requested to travel to different locations.
  • Lifting up to 25 pounds and occasionally 50 pounds.
  • Able to walk, stand, crouch, bench, kneel, lift, carry and reach as needed in large and tight spaces.
  • Good eye/hand coordination and ability to identify color variations, depth perceptions and close or distance visual items.
  • Manual dexterity with occasional repetitive finger motion.
  • Environmental Demands:
  • Ability to work in a test lab environment with varying heat and cold conditions.
  • Wear protective clothing or respiratory protective equipment.
  • Works with irritant chemicals, gases, etc.
